Brighton and Lewes Downs Biosphere are formally notified that the area is now a UNESCO World Biosphere site!

On the 11th June, UNESCO notifed the Brighton and Lewes Downs area that they are now an internationally recognised Biosphere site for:

  • a high quality environment
  • everyone's work to look after it
  • future ambitions to make it an even better place for people and nature

This is the first completely new World Biosphere site established in the UK for almost 40 years, the first ever in South East England, and one of only a handful worldwide to include a city.

Brighton and Lewes Downs is now part of a global family of more than 600 'world-class environments' in over 100 countries, all of which are working to be 'sites of excellence' that try to balance our needs with those of the natural world.

Well done to the Biosphere Project and Friends of the Biosphere!
