Shipley tilting gate is removed

The latest success for the ARPHA project (Adur Restoration of Physical Habitats) is the removal of a tilting gate at Shipley on the Knepp Estate, which was preventing fish passage and impounding the river upstream.

The gate was an Environment Agency owned and maintained structure.  In partnership with the Ouse & Adur Rivers Trust, the Environment Agency led a project to remove the gate and stabilise the clay banks with brushwood terracing.  This has not only removed a significant barrier to fish passage but it has also helped to restore natural river processes, which will be beneficial to wider biodiversity as a whole.
