Trees on the River Uck (TrUck)
The project will implement natural changes to the river, called Catchment Riparian Intervention Measures (CRIMs), where they could be beneficial to slow down flood peaks from different tributaries to reduce the risk of flooding. Natural CRIMs include woodlands in the floodplain, washlands, and large woody debris. These measure help slow down the passage of water through the catchment, allowing more time for water to drain away.
The project provides advice and services to local residents and landowners, through site suitability assessment, free planting and provision of trees and hedgerows in certain areas, or help and assistance with making applications for appropriate grant schemes.
The project is using a broad range of information to help guide the project and highlight areas that would be both beneficial and negative for flooding and wildlife. This research incorporates computer mapping, on the ground survey work and information gained from local people and river users.
The project has already established a foundation for rolling out this work across the Ouse catchment, with scope to further align with the Ouse Upstream Thinking and Middle Ouse Restoration of Physical Habitats projects.
