The hidden source of our water
Beneath the Adur and Ouse catchment lie two important underground stores of water, known as aquifers. Formed by the chalk of the South Downs and the band of Lower Greensand to the north, these aquifers supply drinking water to towns and cities, including Lewes and Brighton & Hove, as well as many rural communities.
Rainwater seeps through the soil and porous rock, replenishing these underground reserves. It can then emerge through springs, feeding our rivers with cool, fresh water and helping to sustain them, particularly during drier periods.
Groundwater is essential to everyday life
It provides drinking water, supports agriculture and helps maintain the river flows that sustain wildlife and enable activities such as swimming, fishing and kayaking. When groundwater becomes polluted or levels fall too low, both people and nature are affected. Protecting these hidden water resources is vital to the health and resilience of our catchment.
